Hypoparathyroidism (or ‘hypopara’ for short) is a rare endocrine condition. It is caused when the parathyroid glands in your neck don’t produce enough parathyroid hormone (PTH) so your PTH level drops too low.
This causes low concentrations of calcium in your blood called hypocalcaemia.
Hypocalcaemia can be a serious condition if left untreated so calcium levels need careful management and regular monitoring.
